The problem

Studying shouldn't mean jumping between a dozen tools.

Between lecture PDFs, slides, past questions, and separate apps for flashcards, quizzes, and AI chat, most of a student's energy goes into managing tools instead of learning. AyeoLab brings the whole workflow into one place — your materials, your AI study partner, and your practice, together.

CSC 301 · Operating SystemsAsk Ayeo
What is a process in operating systems? Explain it like I’m a beginner.

Think of a process as a program that’s currently running — not just sitting on disk, but loaded into memory and actively doing something.

Every process carries three things with it:

  • Its own memory space, separate from other processes
  • A program counter, tracking which instruction runs next
  • A current state — running, waiting, or ready

Your slide on page 4 calls this the “process control block” — that’s the structure the OS uses to keep track of all three.

Which of the following best describes a process in an operating system?

A program stored on disk, not yet running
A program currently loaded into memory and running
A file containing source code
A hardware component that runs instructions
A process is a program in execution — it has its own memory space and is actively managed by the OS, unlike a program that’s just stored on disk.
